Silvergreens Empowers Guests with Personalized Health Information

3/19/2009
Silvergreens Restaurant, a fast casual restaurant that uses local, natural and fresh ingredients, opened in Goleta, California with a vision to provide customers with healthy, tasty food choices. Although not a health food restaurant, Silvergreens' management team began noticing that many of its customers were becoming more conscious about their food selections. These customers wanted nutritional facts about the food they were eating, yet standard nutritional information on in-store posters, brochures and Web sites weren't useful for the customers who customized their orders. Silvergreens wanted to offer these guests information that is both accurate and useful.

That's when management for the Goleta location introduced the Nutricate Receipt, a solution that allows the restaurant to print personalized nutrition content, educational messages and marketing communications on each order's receipt. Now customers know the number of calories, fat, fiber and protein for each item that they ordered. The receipt even accounts for customizations like "no mayo" or "add cheese."

In addition to being health conscious, the solution allows Silvergreens to be more environmentally friendly: Nutricate has integrated their solution with the NCR RealPOS Two-Sided Thermal Receipt Printer and 2ST printing capability. By utilizing 2ST technology, the receipt is reduced in length providing a receipt that is efficient, cost effective and environmentally responsible.

Healthy substitutions
The receipt also includes a "Did you know?" fact and a health quiz which lets guests know that if they make a simple substitution to their order, they can still eat what they love and do so guilt free. What's fascinating is the amount of guests who actually heed this advice and make behavioral changes based on the suggestions. For example, if customers ordered the popular crispy bacon western sandwich their receipt said, "If you substitute the crispy chicken for grilled chicken you can save 139 calories and 6 grams of fat." Management ran reports before and after making this "Did you know?" suggestion and found that a significant percentage of guests who used to eat the crispy version of this sandwich are now substituting grilled chicken on their sandwich instead.

Silvergreens' management believes that by providing guests with nutritional information for all of its items (not just for healthier selections), they are building a relationship of trust with their guests. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, even though the restaurant serves meals with a broad spectrum of calorie and fat totals. Regular guests increase their visits to the restaurant now because they can track their meals and monitor their eating habits.

The Nutricate receipt has also drawn new guests to the restaurant. Since the launch of Nutricate, Siulvergreens' sales have steadily risen 18 percent. This growth helped management to expand its restaurant to downtown Santa Barbara where a second location recently opened.

Ron Gleiberman is Silvergreens' Regional General Manager and has been with the company for six years. Ron was at Silvergreens for the installation of Nutricate and the opening of Silvergreens' second location. Ron can be reached via email at [email protected].
