Amazon Puts Pressure on GrubHub: Adds Restaurant Delivery Service in New York and Dallas

5/18/2016
Amazon.com Inc. announced it has expanded restaurant delivery to more than 350 local restaurants in New York City, promising to deliver food to customers in an hour or less. The expansion of its food delivery service puts Amazon in greater competition with delivery providers like GrubHub.

The service, which is free with an Amazon Prime membership – which costs $99 a year – is now available in Manhattan.  Participating restaurants are in Chelsea, Harlem and the Financial District. Amazon has claimed it will not inflate prices to be greater than what is on a restaurant’s online menu. Potential diners can order from their favorite restaurants using Amazon’s Prime Now mobile app or by visiting the Prime Now website. Customers can scan a list of participating restaurants, look at menus, and place orders from the website or app. Once the order is placed they will be able to monitor the progress of their delivery in real-time. An Amazon Prime membership runs $99 a year.
