Forget April showers, in April it was all about the point of sale with some major POS headlines making waves in the hospitality space. Between Starbucks experiencing a POS outage that impacted more than 6,700 stores in the U.S. and Canada and Olive Garden rolling out tableside tablets, there was also plenty happening on the vendor side and in security. For example, Ingenico Group and Intel Corporation announced a collaboration to develop a mobile tablet that supports EMV and NFC payment functionalities, plus check out some of the latest in POS technology with five point of sale video demos direct from MURTEC. Starbucks POS Glitch Disables POS at Thousands of Stores
Company-owned Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada suffered a point-of-sale outage on Friday, April 24. The company released a statement saying that the glitch was caused by a failure during a daily system refresh and assured customers it was not the result of an external breach. The outage also affected the company’s Evolution Fresh and Teavana stores. 


 
Olive Garden to Enhance Guest Dining Experience with Tabletop Tablets
Olive Garden has announced it has entered into an agreement with Ziosk, makers of the ordering, entertainment and pay-at-the-table tablet, to begin the introduction of tabletop tablets in all of its restaurants nationwide. Olive Garden has been testing Ziosk in a select number of its restaurants since last year, and the feedback from guests and servers has been positive. These restaurants are experiencing higher guest satisfaction scores, faster dining times and increased tip percentages for servers.
 
On The Border Offers Guests Mobile Pay
On The Border (OTB) recently surveyed its core customers to learn that 70 percent found “mobile pay” to be appealing. So OTB, the world’s largest casual dining Mexican restaurant brand, through a relationship with NCR Corporation, is now offering the feature at all of its corporate restaurants.

Ingenico Group and Intel to Bring Payments to the Internet of Things
Ingenico Group and Intel Corporation have announced a collaboration to combine Intel technology and Ingenico Group secure payment acceptance for the Internet of Things. The companies will jointly develop a mobile tablet that supports EMV1 and NFC payment functionalities, a standard required by banks to help prevent credit card fraud.  Under the collaboration, Intel® Data Protection Technology for Transactions will be combined with Ingenico Group payment acceptance capabilities in mobile and future solutions in the United States and Canada, beginning with the jointly developed mobile tablets based on the Intel® Atom™ processor.  
 
Long John Silver's Deploys End-to-End Secure Payment Solution
Long John Silver’s has opted to upgrade its payments infrastructure to Ingenico Group’s EMV- and NFC-ready payment terminals to support its upcoming transition to the EMV payment standard in the U.S. The Ingenico Group solution will enable Long John Silver’s 580+ U.S. locations to accept both magnetic stripe and EMV cards, and also provides a platform for mobile wallet acceptance, such as Apple Pay, in the future.
