OpenTable Exec Shares Top Restaurant Takeaways from MURTEC

3/25/2015
The 20th edition of MURTEC (Multi-Unit Restaurant Technology Conference), took place March 17-19 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. The event brought together more than 550 industry executives responsible for restaurant technology, finance and operations along with solution providers for three days of numerous networking opportunities. In addition to the peer-to-peer connections, the conference boasts countless educational sessions and workshops that provide invaluable insight for restaurant leaders.

One of these informative sessions focused on the topic, “Consumer Research: How Technology Should, and Shouldn’t, Impact the Dining Experience.” The session was led by Leela Srinivasan, Vice President, Restaurant Marketing, OpenTable Inc. who unveiled highlights from brand new research on what diners say they want, along with the latest on the company’s perspective and priorities as it rounds into its sixteenth year serving restaurants and diners. Srinivasan provided attendees with valuable insight into what the end consumer really expects and needs from technology throughout the dining experience.

Srinivasan also managed to find time beyond her speaking duties to glean key takeaways from several other MURTEC sessions. She recaps a few eye-opening stats for restaurant groups surrounding payment, loyalty, guest expectations and the POS and social media management in her blog.

A few of her key takeaways include:
38% of restaurants say they face a major challenge in that guest expectations are outpacing their own technology developments, up from 33% a year ago.

86% of consumers “always” or “frequently” check out restaurant menus online before they dine out.

51% of multi-restaurant chains say they will increase IT spend in 2015 relative to 2014.
