October POS Recap: Apple Pay, Mobility and Security Dominate Point of Sale Headlines

11/3/2014
What topics were top-of-mind for the point of sale in October? Mobility for one, with a Cornell study revealing customers are ready to use payment tech plus stories of restaurants like McDonald’s and Johnny Rockets adding tableside and mobile payments. With the release of Apple Pay, headlines were dominated by news of rollouts and integration including Rubio’s and Task Retail, NCR and MasterCard and more. Meanwhile, the focus on payment security is as keen as ever with the Smart Card Alliance issuing a white paper counselling operators on what technologies can help prevent fraud. These stories, and more, are presented here in Hospitality Technology’s October POS recap.

Tech for Payment Fraud Prevention: EMV, Encryption and Tokenization
Businesses processing credit and debit payments can help protect themselves against new and evolving fraud threats by implementing EMV chip technology, tokenization and encryption security technologies in conjunction, the Smart Card Alliance Payments Council states in a white paper.

Study Says Restaurant Customers Are Ready to Use Payment Technology
As the U.S. restaurant industry gradually rolls out guest-operated payment technology, a Cornell study finds that restaurant guests are enthusiastically ready to use smartphones and table-top tablets to pay their bill. In a survey of nearly 1,300 U.S. consumers, the study found that the consumers rated paying with technology significantly higher than the traditional payment method that involves handing over a credit card.

Johnny Rockets Increases Table Turn Times with Guest-Facing Tablets
Johnny Rockets, a global restaurant chain operating more than 300 locations worldwide, has announced its plans to rollout E la Carte guest-facing tablets. After a three-month pilot testing several competitive solutions, Johnny Rockets saw the best results from the Presto Platform, with better guest satisfaction and engagement ratings to increased table turn times. The Johnny Rockets executive team also selected E la Carte as a technology partner because of Presto’s seamless integration and flexible platform.

MasterCard and NCR Bring Contactless Payment to World Series
MasterCard is bringing contactless acceptance to ballpark food and beverage concessions at the 2014 World Series through a partnership with MLB Advanced Media, enabling fans to make payments using a variety of NFC-enabled devices and services, including the newly introduced Apple Pay. These two ballparks will be the first professional sports facilities to accept Apple Pay, when it debuts for fans attending Game One of the World Series in Kansas City.

A Roadmap to EMV
The deadline for merchants to be capable of accepting EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) is only a year away. The pressing concern surrounding October 15, 2015 is the fact that any operator who doesn’t have the ability to accept EMV credit cards and experiences a breach at one of their locations after that date, will likely bear the responsibility of the cost associated with the fraud.
