Latest POS Security Breach: Hackers Hit Arby's
In a Feb. 9 post by KrebsOnSecurity.com, fast food chain Arby's acknowledged it recently remediated a security breach involving malicious software installed on payment card systems and hundreds of its corporately owned restaurant locations nationwide. Franchise restaurant locations were not impacted. Arby's said it has fully contained and eradicated the malware that was on its point-of-sale systems.
The company was first alerted of the breach in mid-January but said it did not go public about the security breach at the FBI's request.
While the fast food chain has not yet disclosed how many locations or consumers were affected, PSCU, a service organization that serves more than 800 credit unions, sent out an alert to member banks regarding a long list of compromised card numbers from Visa and MasterCard. The alert said a breach at an unnamed retailer compromised more than 355,000 credit and debit cards issued by PCSU member banks and that it believed the data breach was associated with a large fast food chain. PSCU also said it estimated the breach to have occurred from Oct. 25, 2016 to Jan. 19, 2017.
