After Four Cyber Attacks, Hotel to Downgrade Electronic Key Lock System

1/30/2017
According to a Jan. 29 article on NetworkWorld.com, a 4-star hotel in the Austrian Alps, the Romantik Seehotel Jaegerwirt, said cybercriminals used ransomware to lock up the computer running the hotel’s electronic key lock system. Apparently this is the fourth time the hotel has been attacked via cybercrime.

This attack was on a computer that controlled the electronic key lock system, the reservation system and the cash desk system. Guests could not open their rooms with their existing keycards and new keycards could not be programmed. Arriving guests could not have reservations confirmed.

The hotel said it is planning to downgrade the electronic key system from digital key cards to old fashioned door locks with real keys to prevent this type of attack from happening again.
