Curiosity Inspires Innovation

During the 22nd annual Multi-Unit Restaurant Technology Conference, the importance of data and analytics – and what operators are doing with it – emerged as an important theme. To make smart decisions with available data, hospitality operators must turn to analytics, unfortunately, hotels and restaurants are not confident in how they compare to competitors in this area. Almost half (43%) of restaurants feel they lag competition in the use of data and analytics. Meanwhile about one out of three hotels (34%) lack confidence in analytics maturity. Todd Davis, CIO of Choice Hotels and this month’s cover subject, shares his perspective on what has made Choice Hotels an innovation leader, including how data is not a byproduct of technology, but rather is driving it.

Innovate Like a Girl

A recent advertising campaign garnered national attention and praise for exposing the damaging repercussions of using the phrase “like a
girl” as an insult. The advertisement implied that we are conditioned to believe that certain things were not “for girls” or that doing something like a girl meant doing it badly. This issue of HT highlights the phenomenal group of women being honored as Top Women in Foodservice Technology. From rising stars to innovators to the influencers receiving lifetime achievement honors, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to call out the work that is being done by women in a field typically dominated by men.

Optimizing Efficiency

When senior leaders at Arby’s (www.arbys.com) were investigating various innovative strategies for driving growth and profitability, one idea suggested was developing smaller footprint stores in more urban areas, where demographic data suggested more opportunities. This strategy presented several challenges. With less space for back-of-house operations, including equipment, food storage, and labor, it was necessary to optimize efficiency.
