David B. Pittaway, Senior Managing Director of Castle Harlan, Inc., a private merchant banking firm, has been with the company since its founding in 1987. Prior to joining Castle Harlan, Mr. Pittaway worked with Mr. Castle at Branford Castle, Inc., and on the acquisition of Branford Chain, Inc., a distributor of marine mooring equipment, where he previously served as Chief Financial Officer and is now Vice Chairman.
Mr. Pittaway previously worked at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette as Vice President, Strategic Planning and Assistant to the President. He was responsible for analyzing the strategic goals of the organization and the securities industry, and worked on acquisitions done by DLJ for its own account. Before joining DLJ, Mr. Pittaway was a consultant at Bain & Company, a strategic planning consulting firm. At Bain, he consulted on strategic acquisitions and business planning for a wide number of clients. Mr. Pittaway has also been an attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, specializing in labor relations, contract negotiations, arbitration, and federal trade matters.
At Castle Harlan, Mr. Pittaway led the acquisitions of United Malt Holdings Inc, Revere National Corporation, Ethan Allen Inc., Long John Silver's Seafood Shoppes, Morton's Restaurant Group Inc., McCormick & Schmick's, Statia Terminals Group, N.V., American Achievement Corporation, Charlie Brown's Inc., Marie Callender's, Caribbean Restaurants, Perkins Restaurants, Equipment Support Services (ESS), Bravo Development Inc, and the repurchases of Morton=s and McCormick & Schmick's. He was responsible for the merger of Marie Callender's and Perkins, the initial public offering of Bravo, sale of Revere, Statia, American Achievement, and United Malt, both a sale and initial public offering of McCormick & Schmick's, and the initial and secondary public offerings of Morton's Restaurants along with its ultimate sale. He also was involved in the workout of Sharon Steel Corporation, and the restructuring prior to sale of Revere. He currently is on the Board of Directors of Caribbean Restaurants, Inc. He is an independent outside director of The Cheesecake Factory, and Bravo Brio Restaurant Group. He was also formerly a director of Americast Technologies, Inc., and Dave & Busters, Inc.
Mr. Pittaway grew up in Kansas and graduated (B.A. with Highest Distinction, Summerfield Scholar) from the University of Kansas in 1972, with majors in American Studies, History, and Political Science. He has both a Juris Doctor and an M.B.A. with High Distinction (Baker Scholar) from Harvard University, where he concentrated in corporate law, finance, and business operations.
Mr. Pittaway has been an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University School of Business, where he occasionally teaches business planning and investment banking. He formerly served in the United States Army Reserve, and is a co-founder of the Armed Forces Reserve Family Assistance Fund (AFRFAF), which provides financial assistance to families of service members called to active duty to serve in U.S. military operations.
